Estimate when a shop upgrade pays back its cost

The ROI planner compares two scenarios across equal-length shop sessions: your current average profit, and that profit plus an assumed extra amount after an upgrade. It subtracts the one-time upgrade cost and reports how many whole sessions of extra profit would recover it. Your existing profit is not counted as a benefit created by the upgrade.

When to use it

  • Compare an upgrade’s upfront cost with your likely next several sessions.
  • Check whether a modest improvement still pays back before your planning horizon ends.
  • Test a negative lift when a larger shop creates extra costs or operating friction.

Current-build context

The Shop Update added Darkmoon Fair, Ivory Tower and Old Vinery and changed customer pathfinding. Ver. 1.4.3 improved queues and counter navigation. Use measured sessions from your current build: historical checkout or blocked-path problems should not become a fixed forecast of today’s profit. The September 18 public update also changed loot and some furniture bonuses, so a fresh baseline may be needed.

Worked example — hypothetical numbers

Hypothetical example: an upgrade costs 600 gold, current profit is 200 gold per session, expected extra profit is 50 gold per session, and the horizon is 20 sessions. Break-even is 12 sessions. The baseline earns 4,000 gold; the upgrade scenario earns 4,400 after its cost, a 400-gold improvement. Half that lift takes 24 sessions to break even; one-and-a-half times the lift takes 8.

How to interpret the result

Lift is entered in gold per session, not percent. Define a session consistently, such as one shop-opening cycle, and include ordinary costs in the baseline. The forecast ignores changes you have not entered, timing within a session, financing and resale value. Sensitivity rows are hypothetical alternatives, not estimated probabilities.

Frequently asked questions

What happens with zero or negative extra profit?

A positive upgrade cost cannot be recovered through a zero or negative lift. The tool displays that it is not reached rather than an infinite or misleading session count. A free upgrade with zero lift has no cost to recover and creates no extra profit.

Does positive ROI mean my shop becomes profitable?

Not necessarily. A loss-making shop may improve but still lose gold. Projected profit per session and total profit remain visible beside the gain relative to doing nothing.

Does a bigger property guarantee the entered lift?

No. Every lift is your assumption. Customer access, stocking, queue behavior and your play style determine whether the scenario is achieved. Measure comparable sessions after one change.
